A Catch-22

This is totally frustrating.

I thought I had stumbled upon something genius when I began working out in the mornings. I got my workout out of the way early and could enjoy the rest of the day.

However. Working out so early has had an unintended effect.

I am hungry ALL THE TIME. I constantly am snacking, way more than I normally would if I worked out after work. I had noticed it the past few days and had just written it off as weakness. Then I really began thinking about it and talked to a few co-workers who are runners (as in, marathon runners) and discovered it's not just me.

It's the workout time. Apparently, early workouts make you hungrier throughout the day; i.e. after working out, your metabolism is higher and remains higher. So now what do I do? I want to keep working out in the mornings, but I also want to lose a few more pounds. If I am constantly snacking throughout the day, then it becomes harder for me to eat healthy, as well. (I am so all-or-nothing.) So it becomes a lot more likely I will end those days with a DQ blizzard (as I did yesterday) or pizza (two days ago.)

Ironic, huh - I am working out more and am struggling more than ever to maintain my current weight. So I need to find an alternative to help control my hunger. Otherwise I'm in deep trouble!!!

  1. That IS a catch 22! When I was reading your post, I was trying to think of possible solutions. Since it's soo nice to get your workout out of the way in the morning, what if you brought a few healthy snacks with you to work? I know, it seems simple enough, but when I used to work in an office (a million years ago), it was easy for me to think to myself, wow, Starbucks is right downstairs (as the taste of their chocolate chunk cookie instantly caused the saliva in my mouth to thicken, what gross)...

I looked directly across from me at my neighbor Ginger (yes, she has a porn star name) who never seemed to get these cravings...was I that much of a cow? Anyway, my point is that I started noticing how she busted out a snack at a specific time each hour (a banana, assorted nuts, an instant package of oatmeal). This got me thinking: not only would this curve my appetite and put the thought of Starbucks' bakery goods out of my mind completely, but I'd also have something to look forward to at 3:28 in the afternoon (or whatever time I decided to schedule my healthy snack time).

Maybe you should try this? A sack of nuts (no pun intended) might just save you some gas, mileage and calories from the trip to the local Dairy Queen.

You know what the strange thing is? I was actually thinner sitting at a desk all day than I am now, on my feet all night serving chicken and cornbread. I realized that this was because I had a semi-strict schedule I was following...oatmeal in the morning with my coffee, a banana mid-morning (yes, I copied off my porn star neighbor on this one), a lean cuisine for lunch, and then another healthy snack mid-afternoon before I left for the night to workout.

Let me know how it pans out. ;)

  2. thanks, reag! yeah, right now, i always eat a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. and they're healthy - fruit or yogurt, for example.

what i'm going to have to do is just eat a little more with each snack, like fruit and a cheese stick. i need to add a little bit of fat to each snack (like apple with peanut butter.) also, i am going to try to eat bigger breakfasts - like 400-500 calories. and see how this works.
